Everything You Need to Know

What is CBD?

Cannabis contains over 100 cannabinoids, with CBD and THC being two of the most well known. Cannabinoids are chemical compounds that can either be naturally produced in our bodies (endocannabinoids), found in cannabis and numerous other plants (phytocannabinoids) or artificially manufactured in labs. CBD, also known as cannabidiol, is not psychoactive, meaning that it won’t make you feel the effects that THC gives its users – the altered state of awareness that cannabis is associated with.

Now, how does this all work? Our bodies have an endocannabinoid system, consisting of cannabinoids and cannabinoid receptors. The endocannabinoid system plays an important role in regulating and balancing a range of processes in our bodies including immune response, appetite, metabolism, memory and cellular communication. It’s located in the peripheral nervous system, the brain and the central nervous system, where it affects biological functions like learning, anxiety, memory, metabolism, reproduction and growt.

Cannabinoid receptors only unlock when they identify cannabinoids, so during their role in keeping our bodies in homeostasis, they help regulate an expansive range of cognitive and physiological processes. CBD, in this case, helps to regular mood, memory, appetite, the immune system, the reproductive system and pain. Because the endocannabinoid system is located all throughout the body and manages such a vast array of processes, an imbalance there, means an imbalance everywhere.

High quality CBD extracted from cannabis phytocannabinoids will bring the body back into balance. Because cannabinoids are already naturally present in our bodies, you can feel safe in knowing that this is a completely natural supplement that your body will recognize right away.

The Difference Between Cannabis, Marijuana & Hemp

Cannabis is considered one of the oldest cultivated plants. It’s a term for the 170+ flowering plants that fall under the genus Cannabaceae.

One of those cannabis species is hemp – one of the most versatile plants in the world. It contains high levels of CBD and very low levels of THC. It can be used to create textiles, biofuels as well as consumed in the form of hemp seeds. Hemp flowers are what’s used to extract CBD for the creation of consumable oils and skin care products without any intoxicating effects.

Marijuana, on the other hand, is hemp’s psychoactive cousin, containing high levels of THC and low levels of CBD. While hemp and marijuana share a species, they are chemically very different, with marijuana causing intoxication when consumed due to its high THC content.

Things to Keep in Mind Before Use

Although CBD is often well-tolerated and safe to use, it’s always important to talk to your doctor before taking it, just as with any other supplement. It’s crucial to know where your CBD oil is coming from and make sure you’re getting a pure, precisely-dosed oil with no THC in it.

Some side effects may include:

– Fatigue
– Reduced appetite
– Diarrhea
– Drowsiness
– Interaction with blood thinners or other medications

The Grapefruit Warning

Grapefruit interferes with the liver enzymes that help metabolize and break down medications. In the body, CBD does the same. Eating grapefruit or taking CBD while taking certain medications can cause higher levels of them in your blood, leading to more side effects. Look for the grapefruit warning on your pharmaceutical drugs and always check with your physician before starting CBD.

Pregnant or Breastfeeding Women

Before taking CBD, it’s always better to air on the side of caution when pregnant pr breastfeeding, just as you would with any other supplements or medications. With the lack of studies and historical data regarding how CBD affects the mother, the fetus and the pregnancy, we recommend not taking the risk.

The Source of Your Product

It’s important to know the product you are purchasing. The hemp that the CBD is extracted from should be grown by following agricultural guidelines as to avoid pesticides and other chemicals that often get sprayed on soil from ending up in the oil. Make sure to carefuly read the ingredients, check the THC content (if any), get well-acquainted with CBD terminology and read the provided lab reports. Want to see our lab reports?
